Saint George Area Information St. George, Utah, is a beautiful area with much to offer. Many types of desert and coastal palm trees grow throughout St. George. Visitors are surprised to see orange trees, banana trees and many other types of tropical plants. These plants can flourish due to the south west Utah climate which is similar to Las Vegas (100 miles south on I-15). St. George is located in the north west corner of the Mojave Desert surrounded by tall mountains. These mountains receive snow every winter and are only a short drive from down town. There is more to see and explore than one might think while simply driving through. Enjoy the splendor of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, The Grand Canyon and Snow Canyon State Park. Golf at one of 13 lush golf courses. Hike or bike the trails in or around the national parks. Visit St. George for the Art's Festival in April or the St. George Marathon and Huntsman World Senior Games in October. St. George was settled by Mormon Pioneers, about 1861, sent by Brigham Young to grow cotton. Cotton farming, as well as processing at the Washington Cotton Mill, continued until after the Civil War. St. George received the nickname “Utah’s Dixie”. St. George is known as a winter haven for what the 130,000 locals like to call "Snow Birds" (tourists who come to St. George to warm up away from the snow). St. George becomes a Mecca for vacationing college students who go south for an early taste of summer away from the snow. St. George Area Links City of Saint George Official Website
